Jarhead
Another great book we read this semester is Jarhead by Anthony Swafford. This book had a huge impact on me. Jarhead was based on Swafford’s experiences in the Gulf War as a sniper in the USMC. This book had a lot of sentimental value to it from the beginning to the end so that is why I took to it.
After the training when Swafford was send to Iraq, he had images of killing all sorts of people and conquering, but to his surprise there was little involvement with war which led this war phenomenon to no end leaving the troops all alone doing nothing but thinking, praying and hoping.
This long painful journey of seeking revenge and defending our country all led to the boredom stage in the Marines lives. The book involves sex a lot emphasizing to us what and who they rather be doing rather then sit there waiting for war. The letters and pictures they receive become more what they seem because that is their only way to have contact with the outside world.
What I have recognized is that being at war is a very sentimental time and moment in a Marine live. They are not only dealing with the struggle of being there but they are also struggling with the reality of LIFE itself.

blackwatch
Blackwatch
Black Watch written by Gregory Burke was very interesting. The play falls a lot on anticipation which made it very catchy. Black Watch is a Scottish army located in Fife. They portrayed themselves to be a very happy army willing to serve and protect their country and army. The army is exceptionally important to the people because there is history behind it all. Their parents and grandparents were part of the army so they had a strong connection to the army and kept it on a personal level. The setting of the play was in the war in Fife and Iraq, the other setting was at bar/pool hall where the troops spent most of their time. A lot went on in this play because they are anticipating their lives and fates. By observing and reading about this play I came to realize that when you are faced and forced to be in certain situations, it may take a toll on you. The play gave us outlook on their experiences being in the army and facing everyday problems and emotions.
Being in the army is a very different lifestyle and very close-knit. Through this experience, you meet people who evidentially become part of you and who you are. When this process strengthens, you treat each other as family and as one.
I correlated the play Blackwatch to Jarhead because the plays/stories run on the same line and perspective. It shows a great sense of togetherness which is sincere and empathetic.

pillowman
The Pillowman
The Pillowman was a very intriguing play that I found myself to be very engaged in. A writer named Katurian was being interrogated over the content of several of his writings and stories. Katurian at first thinks that he is being questioned by the detectives about political issues pertaining to his stories until he was informed that a series of child murders were being taken place a lot and that the killings were inspired by his stories which was very freaky. Michael was the psycho brother of Katurian who confessed to the killings of the children and as confessed to reenacting all of his psychotic stories that Katurian wrote. Katurian was a very unique writer and even though hid stories may be out of the ordinary and uncouth, his stories are his prized possessions. After these disturbing episodes, it gives the writer time to see if what he is writing about is safe and readable to his audience. Ariel and Tupolski said that they would not diminish Katurians stories being what his brother did was morally wrong but they wind up killing Katurian anyway which proves that destiny plays a essential role in life and in time.

4 PAGE ASSIGNMENT
The Mercy Seat
The Mercy Seat by Neil LaBute was a very inspiring memoir with a lot of meaning to it. Throughout the memoir it portrays to us the love triangle to which Ben and Abby are involved in. It was inspiring because it seemed to be based on the events after 911. Ben and Abby both worked in the towers at a branch, and Abby happens to be Ben’s boss. They both are devastated about the events of 911 especially being that all of the employees are missing or dead. The twisted part of it all is that this affair has been going on for a long time and they portray themselves to be a married couple because of the way they act. Meanwhile he is married with 3 kids. The ironic twist in the memoir is that Ben kind of uses this tragic episode to justify his situation about him leaving to be with Abby to his advantage which was horrible yet clever at the same time. By him playing dead was an ingenious idea but at the same time he was just running away from his problems and issues. Not until the end did he realize what he has and what he could potentially loose just by making one bad decision. Throughout this journey I found al of our readings to be quite similar being that every reading had a problem and a twist to it.

HOUSEE
THIS HOUSE REPRESENTS THE HOUSE IN THE BOOK. IT SEEMS TO BE VERY DEPRESSING AND LONELY . DANIELEWSKI PORTRAYED TO US IN THE BOOK HOW HE WANTED US AS VIEWERS TO SEE HIS HOUSE. HE WANTED US TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING GOES WRONG RATHER THEN BE ALL LAUGHS AND GIGGLES. THE IRONIC PART IS HOW HIS DAUGHTER LIKES THE HOUSE... THIS PICTURE CAUGHT MY EYE BECAUSE I PICTURED THE HOUSE BEING AND LOOKING LIKE THIS.
